  Gardeners Have the Power! (low-definition)

  Together, gardeners and good food advocates pitched in to help give the White House and the Obamas a healthy kitchen garden. Now it's time for gardeners around the world to work together again on a much bigger challenge: feeding a growing population with a rapidly degrading natural resource base and in a rapidly changing global climate. There are currently over 1 billion hungry people in the world and that number is set to rise as the global population rises from 6.7 billion to over 9 billion in 2050. While we don't know yet how we will feed all these new hungry people, we do know one thing for sure: planting more kitchen gardens - behind homes, schools, and in vacant urban lots - will be part of the solution. Kitchen Gardeners International is a 501c3 nonprofit community of 18000 people from over 100 countries who are growing some of their own food and helping others to do the same. KGI is currently entered in America's Giving Challenge, a contest to see which nonprofit groups can raise the most $10 donations before November 6th.   What Qualifies as a "Green Job"?

  On June 17, the House of Representatives debated HB 3300, a bill to instruct the State Workforce Investment Board to develop a plan to promote the growth of green jobs. The bill specifically requires the Board to define green jobs and green economy to enable the state to direct resources toward related workforce development activities. However, as this clip demonstrates, the definition of a green job is subjective. Rep. Matt Wingard asks the Democratic sponsor of the bill whether Oregonians working in natural resources, agriculture and other industries would qualify as having green jobs. After dodging the question, it took another Democrat to get the sponsor to admit that the definition would likely be narrowed to existing jobs in selected sectors- excluding the thousands of Oregonians who work with renewable resources every day.

  Pew Finds Clean Energy Economy Generates Significant Job Growth

  WASHINGTON The number of jobs in America's emerging clean energy economy grew nearly two and a half times faster than overall jobs between 1998 and 2007, according to a report released today by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew developed a clear, data-driven definition of the clean energy economy and conducted the first-ever hard count across all 50 states of the actual jobs, companies and venture capital investments that supply the growing market demand for environmentally friendly products and services. Pew found that jobs in the clean energy economy grew at a national rate of 9.1 percent, while traditional jobs grew by only 3.7 percent between 1998 and 2007. There was a similar pattern at the state level, where job growth in the clean energy economy outperformed overall job growth in 38 states and the District of Columbia during the same period. The report also found that this promising sector is poised to expand significantly, driven by increasing consumer demand, venture capital infusions, and federal and state policy reforms. America's clean energy economy has grown despite a lack of sustained government support in the past decade. By 2007, more than 68200 businesses across all 50 states and the District of Columbia accounted for about 770000 jobs.
